Prior to starting his career in financial services Mr. Miller was a research
assistant in neuropharmacology at Smith, Kline & French Laboratories in
Philadelphia (where he was born and raised). At the age of 19 Mr. Miller was
elected as a student member of the New York Academy of Sciences, at that time
one of the youngest ever elected. After attending the State University of New
York at Stony Brook, Mr. Miller was invited to Pasadena by Roger Sperry, the
famed neuroscientist from Cal Tech and winner of the 1981 Nobel Prize in
medicine. However, drawn to the natural beauty of Oregon Mr. Miller completed
his under graduate degree at the University of Oregon in 1981 receiving a B.S.
in Natural Sciences.
Leaving scientific research Mr. Miller began his financial services career in
1983. Prior to establishing his own practice, he served as a senior account
executive, first in a regional pension administration firm and then in the
employee benefits department of a national then global brokerage firm. In the
latter, he served as technical sales support to 14 account executives in the
design, installation, funding of complex retirement and estate plans for
privately held, primarily family businesses.
He has held various securities licenses throughout his career and served as the
President and Chief Investment Officer of an SEC registered investment advisor
for many years. Inspired to action by the corporate scandals of the early 2000’s
his focus shifted to institutional consulting and since that time his work in
finance has been focused on fiduciary training and consulting for large
institutional and sovereign clients. He is co-author of a Fiduciary Governance
training program endorsed by Financial Executives International (FEI), the
largest association of finance officers in North America. The first program of
its kind in the country, the training integrates emotional intelligence
principles into a pension Plan Sponsor management framework. This unique
approach to fiduciary conduct has been adopted by numerous multi‐billion pension
Plan Sponsors as the governance framework for large pools of retirement funds.
Miller is a frequent speaker at national conferences including those of FEI, the
AICPA, the IFEBP, the Profit Sharing and 401(k) Council of America, the Western
Pension & Benefits Conference, Plan Sponsor and FI 360. His expertise in
fiduciary governance has been recognized by the National Association of
Corporate Directors, where Miller served as Chairman of a conference program on
the topic in October of 2008. He has been quoted in various publications
including Institutional Investor, Directors & Boards, FEI, CFO, Plan Sponsor and
Workforce magazines. He has submitted testimony to Congress on fiduciary reforms
and currently serves as a Technical Expert for the Center for Fiduciary
Excellence (CEFEX) in Toronto. Having consulted on the fiduciary management of
$100+ billion in retirement assets globally, since 2006 Miller has participated
in various fiduciary consulting assignments for the governments of Chile, Dubai
and Jordan.
In Dec.2007, the Office of the President of the World Bank invited Mr. Miller to
a Bank sponsored conference in Cyprus on the topic of Pension Reform in the
Middle East and North Africa. As the only American present, the conference,
attended by representatives of 10 Arab and Muslim governments, was one of the
highlights of his career.
In May of 2009 Miller was invited by senior staff at the Board of Governors of
the Federal Reserve of the United States to address a Fed sponsored conference
of various regulatory agencies with banking oversight on the topic of ERISA
Fiduciary Governance.
Miller serves in a senior advisory capacity to the management of various
emerging technology companies in health care, clean water and the infrastructure
space. He lives with his wife of 25 years and two dogs on Vashon Island,
Washington (near Seattle).
